Osteo – Arthritis

Is a form of arthritis in which the protective cartilages that cushions  between two bony joints like knee joint, joints of arms, hips and spine gets damaged. Osteo – arthritis in Ayurveda comes under  vata disorder, it is called as Sandhigata vata. It mainly affects the asthi(bones). There will be deformity in the bones. Mainly the bigger and weight bearing joints get affected like the knee joints, ankle joints. The synovial fluid between the two joints gets dried up  due to degeneration.

Causes

Symptoms

Pain -severe pain mainly in the knee joints, patient becomes unable to walk and perform daily activity.

Stiffness – joint stiffness might be most noticeable upon awakening or after being inactive.

Tenderness – pain on touching the affected joints

Loss of flexibility – inability move the joints throughout its range of movement.

Swelling – on the affected joint like the knee joints, ankle joints.

Bone spurs – extra bony projections which develop around the affected joint which leads to pain.

Grating sensation – a crackling sound is produced on movement of the affected joint.

 

Ayurvedic  Management of Sandhigata Vata( Osteo- arthritis)
